SENEGAL                                                                                                                                                                 Information on the country                                                                        Geographical information                                                                                                                                                                                      Senegal is situated at the western most point of the African continent and is the northern most black African country on the west coast with the Senegal river as natural border to Mauritania, the southern most Arabic country. Besides Mauritania the other neighbouring countries are Mali, Guinea Conakry and Guinea Bissao. The sandy Atlantic coast, all along Senegal’s west, stretches for about 500 kilometres.

The country side represents a low plateau with some hills in the east of which the highest one is about 500 m above sea level (northern end of the Fouta Djalon mountains). The vegetation is scarce in the north and the centre and subtropical in the south and the east.                                               The labyrinth of the Sine-Saloum and Casamance river deltas with their forests of mangroves are bird’s paradise. In the few national parks you will be able to watch the birds, many of them migrating from Europe during winter time.

Dakar, the Senegalese capital, is located on a half island, the Cap Vert. Its natural bay is today one of the busiest harbours on the west coast. Just about a half an hour boat trip away lays Gorée Island.                                                                                                                                   The English speaking country Gambia is cutting into Senegal along the river Gambia for a length of about 300 kilometres, separating therefore Senegal’s southern part, the Casamance, from the north.

The former colonial capital St. Louis was built near the delta of the Senegal river. At the time already well known for its nice climate, it was one of the first French towns in Africa. Commercial activities were then promoted very quickly as the sea on one side and the river on the other formed an important natural harbour with possibilities of inland transportation towards Podor. Today the Senegal river is open for boat trips the whole year round. Because of a rich soil in the river valley agriculture activities are possible in summer through flooding and during the dry season through irrigation

The climate                                                                                                                                                                                                    As the vegetation shows, the predominant climate in the north and the centre is rather dry, the one of the Sahel, which means no precipitations from October till end of June, with one short rainy season from July till September. In the south and east with its subtropical climate the rainy season is longer, from June till October, the rest of the year remains dry.
