The temperature varies
only little along the coast, between 20 and 28 degrees during daytime
but humidity can reach between 80-98% during the rainy season, which
makes it quite uncomfortable. Inland and in the south temperatures are
mostly above 30 degrees. Generally October is by far the hottest month
in the year, therefore travellers chose mostly the months December till
May to visit Senegal, because even if the sun is very bright the night
temperature can fall till 16 degrees on the coast.
All depends on the winds which
mostly blow from the sea. Sometimes we get Harmattan, a dry hot wind
from the Sahara, carrying sand and dust covering the normally deep blue
sky like fog.

If you are interested in traditional societies, the
Bassari and the Bedic are still rather authentic ones. As they
live in a remote area in the east, behind the National park Niokolo
Koba and towards the Guinean border there exists very little exchange
with the outside world certainly one of the reasons allowing this
population to maintain their ancient life style.
The languages
Each ethnic group has
its own language. French and Wolof are the official languages. In
school French is used and since 2 years the use of some local languages
was introduces especially in primary school.
Religion
90% of the population is Moslem; about 5% are Christians (mainly
Catholics) and other 4% believe in traditional
religions.
The health system
In the bigger towns and especially in Dakar you can find a good
number of health services, some of them, the private ones, are often
equipped with ultramodern examination tools. Pharmacies and medical
doctors are many, which can not be said for the rural areas where
health services are still too scarce.
Education
The illiteracy rate among
adults is still very high, about 70%. The government is undertaking
much effort to improve the enrolment of the children into school, today
about 86% attend classes. Unfortunately the defaulter rate is still
quite important. The lessons are taught in French and very recently in
order to improve the children’s language skills the use of local
languages was introduced, especially during the first school years. In
French-Arab bilingual schools the teaching language is Arab. Government
and NGOs join their efforts in order to improve the adults reading and
writing capacities.
There exist 2 Universities in Senegal, with the main one in Dakar and
the second one in St.Louis. Students are able to choose among the 4
faculties: Medicine and Pharmacy, Natural Science, Law, Language and
Humanities. During the last years many superior professional schools,
some of them international ones, opened their doors in Dakar and if one
has the money, one also has the choice! Unfortunately professional and
technical training is nearly inexistent in Senegal therefore youngsters
who haven’t got the chance to go to university are either on the road
or try to earn their daily living through occupations among the
informal sector. Auberge
